The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is the first battery-electric AMG production model, based on the Mercedes EQ architecture for luxury and executive-class vehicles. With an output of up to 560 kW (761 hp) and maximum torque of 1020 Nm, it accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. The EQE 53 4MATIC+, on the other hand, is based on the electric-exclusive Mercedes architecture of the luxury and premium class (EVA2) and offers a preliminary range of 458-527 km.

Both models feature the AMG Sound Experience, which brings a new, powerfully sonorous sound to electric driving. The exclusive AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE is generated inside and out, matching the current driving status, the selected driving mode, or the driver’s preferences. It creates a captivating and emotional driving experience unique to AMG.

The electric motors of the EQS 53 4MATIC+ and EQE 53 4MATIC+ deliver enhanced power, efficiency, and noise comfort. The AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive system ensures optimal power transmission to the road, while the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT offers a powerful yet comfortable driving experience.

The exterior design of the AMG EQS and EQE models combines one-bow lines and a cab-forward design with distinctive AMG features. The interior showcases sporty elements, including nappa leather upholstery, carbon fiber and microfiber steering wheel, and various AMG-specific details that enhance the cabin’s sportiness and style. The AMG EQS sets a new standard in handling dynamics with the inclusion of rear-axle steering. With a steering angle of up to 9 degrees, this innovative feature significantly improves the agility of the spacious sedan. The turning circle is reduced to a level comparable to compact class vehicles. The interaction between front-axle and rear-axle steering ensures effortless maneuverability in city driving conditions, as the rear wheels steer in the opposite direction to the front wheels at speeds below 60 km/h. This results in a highly nimble and light-footed driving experience. At speeds above 60 km/h, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels, effectively extending the wheelbase and enhancing stability during high-speed maneuvers, rapid lane changes, and sudden evasive actions. The AIRMATIC air suspension further enhances ride comfort, even on challenging road surfaces, while the vehicle’s ride height adjusts to speed, optimizing efficiency and range at higher speeds.

The interior of the AMG EQS exudes sportiness and luxury with distinctive AMG elements. Nappa leather upholstery featuring AMG-specific seat graphics creates an inviting atmosphere. The AMG steering wheel, crafted with a combination of carbon fiber and MICROCUT microfiber, ensures a secure grip during driving. It is complemented by AMG steering wheel buttons and silver-colored aluminum shift paddles, allowing for the selection of various recuperation levels and emphasizing the sporty character of the cabin. Equipped with the groundbreaking MBUX Hyperscreen, the AMG EQS showcases a large, curved screen unit extending seamlessly from A-pillar to A-pillar. This sophisticated system merges three screens under a single glass cover, offering a visually stunning and integrated display. Within the MBUX infotainment system, the AMG TRACK PACE feature acts as a virtual race engineer, constantly recording over 80 vehicle-specific data points, including speed and acceleration, particularly useful during track sessions. Meticulous aerodynamic fine-tuning has been conducted by AMG’s specialists, incorporating extensive wind tunnel and flow tests. The result is maximum efficiency during both slow and dynamic, high-speed driving. Key design features contributing to this achievement include a high-gloss black front splitter with chrome trim, flics and fins on the air intakes, AIR CURTAINS on the left and right, high-gloss black AMG side sill panels, and a color-matched rear apron with an aerodynamically optimized diffuser featuring six longitudinal fins. Additionally, a larger rear spoiler compared to the AMG Line variant enhances driving dynamics by reducing rear lift without compromising drag. The side air intakes feature an air curtain effect, which concentrates and directs the airflow ahead of the front wheels at higher speeds. Intelligent Energy Recovery

The AMG EQS not only delivers impressive dynamic power during acceleration but also excels in energy recuperation during braking. Its intelligent recuperation system enables efficient energy recovery, with a recuperation output of up to 300 kW. This ensures optimal utilization of energy and contributes to the overall efficiency of the vehicle.

Customizable Recuperation and Advanced Battery Technology

The AMG EQS offers drivers the flexibility to adjust the level of recuperation in three stages using conveniently placed switches on the steering wheel. The ECO Assistant provides situation-specific support, and combined braking is available until the vehicle comes to a complete standstill.

The vehicle is powered by a cutting-edge 400-volt battery featuring the latest lithium-ion technology. Notably, the battery utilizes a new generation of cell chemistry that significantly reduces cobalt content to just ten percent, while optimizing the active material with a ratio of nickel, cobalt, and manganese at 8:1:1. This achievement enhances sustainability while maintaining high performance. With a usable energy content of 108.4 kWh, the high-voltage battery empowers the AMG EQS with remarkable capabilities. Additionally, the AMG-specific wiring ensures compatibility with the vehicle’s high-performance capacity, and the battery management system is uniquely configured for AMG requirements. The battery also boasts a significantly higher energy density compared to previous iterations, enabling higher charging capacity. Notably, over-the-air updates for the battery management system are now possible, adding further convenience and adaptability.

The new battery generation excels in shorter charging times. When using direct current quick-charging stations, the battery can be charged at up to 200 kW, allowing for an additional range of up to 300 kilometers (WLTP) to be added in just 19 minutes. Furthermore, the electrified AMG can be conveniently charged at home or public charging stations with up to 22 kW of alternating current, thanks to the onboard charger.

Durability and Safety Innovations

The battery is engineered for exceptional durability, with the ECO Charging function playing a vital role. This intelligent control system reduces battery load during charging, effectively slowing down the natural aging process. Additionally, the “charge interruption” function enables users to pause the charging process, allowing for cost-effective use of off-peak electricity at a later time. The battery certificate guarantees the high-voltage battery’s longevity, with coverage extending up to ten years or 250,000 kilometers.

In terms of safety and performance, the AMG EQS is equipped with the AMG high-performance compound braking system. This advanced system features six-piston brake calipers and 415×33 millimeter brake discs at the front, along with single-piston brake calipers and 378×22 millimeter brake discs at the rear. For enhanced braking power, the AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system utilizes even larger 440×40 millimeter brake discs at the front. The system incorporates the i-Booster function, which seamlessly combines electric recuperation with hydraulic braking for optimal efficiency. Specially tuned to deliver the hallmark AMG pedal feel and complement the larger AMG braking system, the i-Booster function enhances the authentic driving experience.

Efficient and Intelligent Route Planning with Electric Intelligence

The AMG EQS leverages the power of Navigation with Electric Intelligence to provide predictive route planning and optimize driving efficiency. This advanced system plans the fastest and most convenient route, including necessary charging stops, based on various factors and dynamically adapts to changes in traffic conditions and driving style. By considering factors such as energy demand, topography, route, driving speed, and heating/cooling requirements, Electric Intelligence ensures a fast and comfortable journey.

With Electric Intelligence, the AMG EQS continuously monitors the traffic situation on the planned route, detecting traffic congestion, road closures, and fluctuations in energy demand. The system combines onboard data with cloud-based information for accurate and up-to-date calculations.

The planned route can be customized to meet individual preferences. Users have the option to set additional reserve energy levels at the destination and charging stations (SoC, State of Charge) with a standard reserve of ten percent SoC. If the “Charge at destination” function is enabled, the system may temporarily reduce the reserve energy until reaching the destination. MBUX provides real-time feedback on the available battery capacity, ensuring users have the necessary range to return to their starting point without requiring additional charging.

Additional features for personalized route planning include the preference for manually added charging stations along the route, the ability to exclude suggested charging stations, and calculation of expected charging costs per stop.

To ensure a comprehensive safety concept, the battery of the AMG EQS is securely located in a crash-protected area within the underbody structure. It is embedded in the body shell structure, which includes a specially designed extruded aluminum profile for enhanced protection. This innovative manufacturing process enables the creation of complex sections precisely tailored to meet safety requirements. The battery housing features energy-absorbing structures at the front and side, along with a rigid, double-walled base plate, providing additional safeguarding for the battery modules.

Extensive Testing and High Safety Standards

Mercedes-Benz has a long-standing commitment to rigorous crash and component tests, surpassing legal requirements with their internal standards. The company prioritizes the utmost protection for the batteries, conducting tests to evaluate battery behavior under shock loads, foreign object penetration, overheating, and overcharging.

Furthermore, a comprehensive safety system is in place for everyday operation, encompassing temperature, voltage, and insulation monitoring as continuous safety measures. In the event of a fault, the battery automatically shuts off. Stationary crash monitoring during DC charging is also a standard feature, ensuring safety during the charging process.

Sustainability in Production and Materials

The AMG EQS is produced at Factory 56, which features 12,000 photovoltaic modules on its roof. These modules generate approximately 5,000 kWp, covering around 30 percent of the factory’s annual energy requirements. Factory 56 sets an industry-leading example by reducing its overall energy consumption by 25 percent compared to other assembly shops. Notably, Factory 56 is a zero-carbon facility, completely CO2-neutral. The roof area of Factory 56 is adorned with 40 percent greenery, and the main building incorporates recycled concrete, contributing to its sustainable design. Starting from 2022, the production of lithium-ion batteries at the Hedelfingen plant will be CO2-neutral, aligning with Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices. The company has also established strategic partnerships to procure battery cells manufactured in a CO2-neutral manner.

The components of the AMG EQS prioritize resource-saving materials, including recycled and renewable raw materials. The floor coverings of the all-electric AMG model are crafted using a new yarn made of regenerated nylon, offering a significant CO2 reduction of over 6.5 tonnes per tonne of yarn compared to new material. The steel used in the vehicle body consists of 80 percent secondary steel, primarily sourced from recycled steel scrap.

Battery Life and Reuse

After serving their purpose in the vehicle, the batteries can be repurposed for a second lease of life. For instance, they can be utilized in energy banks operated by Mercedes-Benz Energy GmbH. Collaborating with partners, the company has successfully integrated three large-scale energy banks, totaling approximately 50 MWh, into the German electricity grid using automotive battery systems. The first 2nd-life battery storage system was connected to the grid in Lünen, Westphalia, in October 2016.

Introducing the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+

The Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+ is available as the sole variant, offering a performance-oriented drive concept powered by two electric motors. The dynamic electric drivetrain (eATS), with a motor on each axle, provides fully variable all-wheel drive, delivering optimal power transmission to the road surface in all driving conditions. The AMG EQE boasts an impressive power spectrum of up to 505 kW (687 hp). With the inclusion of the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package and boost function, the vehicle achieves a maximum torque range of up to 1000 Nm, further enhancing its performance capabilities.

Exterior Design with Distinctive AMG Features

The AMG EQE shares its one-bow lines and cab-forward design with the AMG EQS, exuding a sleek and dynamic appearance. At the front, the AMG-specific black panel grille stands out, featuring chrome vertical struts, an integrated Mercedes star, and “AMG” lettering. The DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps showcase a unique AMG projection when the vehicle is opened or closed. The front bumper, painted in the vehicle’s color, contrasts with the high-gloss black AMG A-wing design front apron, adorned with chrome trim. The same design language extends to the high-gloss black front splitter with chrome trim, flics, and fins on the optical air intakes. Additionally, the car features high-gloss black air diffusers on the sides for an AIR CURTAIN effect. The AMG side sill panels in high-gloss black, the vehicle-colored rear apron with an aerodynamically optimized diffuser, and the larger rear spoiler contribute to the vehicle’s dynamic aesthetics. These measures not only enhance the visual appeal but also improve driving dynamics and efficiency by reducing rear lift without significantly affecting drag. The AMG light-alloy wheels are aerodynamically optimized, and the AMG EQE includes an AMG spoiler lip and panoramic sunroof.

For those opting for the AMG Night Package, the AMG EQE incorporates black or black chrome finishes on various exterior elements. The 21-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels, painted in matte black with a high-sheen finish, along with red-painted brake calipers, further enhance the sporty exterior. Similar to the AMG EQS, the AMG EQE is equipped with the Driving Assistance Plus Package and AIRMATIC suspension.

Driving Dynamics and Interior Touches

The AMG EQE features rear axle steering, allowing for a steering angle of up to 4.5 degrees. The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package offers additional driving dynamics enhancements, including a powerful boost for RACE START, an increased maximum speed of 240 km/h, and the immersive AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE “Performance.” This sound system includes specially composed sounds that accompany charging or infotainment functions, providing a truly immersive AMG experience. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 3.3 seconds.

The interior of the AMG EQE exudes a sporty atmosphere, accentuated by distinctive AMG elements. The AMG seats feature individual graphics and special seat covers in two-tone black/space grey ARTICO man-made leather with MICROCUT microfiber and red decorative topstitching. Alternatively, nappa leather seat upholstery with AMG-specific seat graphics is available. AMG badges adorn the backrests of the front seats, and embossed AMG emblems can be found in the front head restraints. The AMG EQE is equipped with the impressive MBUX hyperscreen and head-up display, transforming the windscreen into a digital cockpit. The MBUX augmented reality for navigation connects the virtual and real worlds. Opting for the Premium Plus package enhances the vehicle with a Burmester® 3D surround sound system, active ambient lighting, and THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control. Like the AMG EQS, the AMG EQE features AMG TRACK PACE, a system that continuously records over 80 vehicle-specific data.

Additionally, the AMG EQE includes the Mirror package, enabling the folding of outside mirrors for added protection during parking. The URBAN GUARD vehicle protection Plus offers an anti-theft alarm system and interior monitoring system for enhanced safety. The Parking Package with Remote Parking functions incorporates a 360-degree camera, Active Parking Assist, pre-installed remote parking assist, and memory parking assist, ensuring a smoother parking experience. New Battery Generation with 90.6 kWh Capacity

The AMG EQE is equipped with a powerful 328-volt high-performance drive battery utilizing the latest lithium-ion technology. With a usable energy content of 90.6 kWh, it consists of ten modules housing a total of 360 pouch cells. The battery management system is specifically tuned for AMG, and over-the-air updates are available for continuous improvements throughout its life cycle. The AMG EQE also features an AMG-specific wiring harness tailored to its higher performance capability.

The new battery generation allows for shorter charging times. The energy storage system can be fast-charged at up to 170 kW at DC fast charging stations, replenishing approximately 180 kilometers (WLTP) of range in just 15 minutes. The onboard charger enables convenient charging at home or public stations with 11 kW or optionally 22 kW AC power.

Intelligent Energy Recovery for Efficient Charging

The AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ and EQE 53 4MATIC+ offer efficient energy recovery through intelligent recuperation. With a recuperation power of up to 260 kW, the driver can choose from three levels of recuperation via steering wheel switches. The ECO Assist system provides situation-optimized support. In levels D and D-, the driver can experience one-pedal driving and combined braking to a standstill. In DAuto, the vehicles achieve up to 5 m/s² deceleration, with 3 m/s² attributed to recuperation (2 m/s² via the AMG high-performance brake system).

AMG High-Performance Brake System

Equipped with a six-piston brake caliper and 415×33 millimeter brake discs on the front axle, the AMG high-performance brake system delivers exceptional deceleration performance, high resistance to fading, and excellent durability. The rear axle features single-piston brake calipers and 378×22 millimeter brake discs. The AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system, available with 21-inch wheels, utilizes even larger 440×40 millimeter brake discs. Another technological highlight is the intelligent i-Booster brake booster, which combines electric recuperation with hydraulic braking for optimal efficiency. The i-Booster is meticulously calibrated to deliver the characteristic AMG pedal feel and work seamlessly with the AMG brake system.

Sustainable Material Cycle

To promote sustainability, the components of these vehicles weigh over 80 kilograms and are crafted using resource-saving materials, including recycled and renewable raw materials. Mercedes-Benz Energy GmbH, in collaboration with its partners, has already integrated three large-scale energy banks with a total capacity of approximately 50 MWh into the German electricity grid using automotive battery systems.
