Jaecoo J7 PHEV Preview in Malaysia – Price, Features, and Launch Details

Jaecoo Malaysia is currently previewing the highly anticipated Jaecoo J7 PHEV at the Orange Atrium, Sunway Pyramid. This exciting event will be open to the public until Sunday, October 27th, offering visitors an up-close look at the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Available in all-wheel drive (AWD) and front-wheel drive (FWD) configurations, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV has an estimated starting price of RM170,000 and is expected to arrive in Malaysia by the end of 2024. Pre-bookings are now open, and the standard petrol-powered J7 is currently priced at RM138,800 for the FWD model and RM148,800 for the AWD version.

Jaecoo J7 PHEV: Key Exterior and Interior Features

The Jaecoo J7 PHEV boasts a few noticeable exterior updates that set it apart from the petrol version. These include a new set of 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Kumho tyres (as opposed to Giti on the standard J7) and a sleeker design for the side mirrors. A CCS2 charging port is discreetly located on the right side of the vehicle. Despite these enhancements, the J7 PHEV retains the elegant and modern design of its petrol-powered counterpart.

Inside, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV keeps the spacious and sophisticated interior layout seen in the petrol J7, highlighted by a large 14.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. However, the centre console in the PHEV model has been redesigned with a modern row of buttons replacing the rotary drive mode selector, and the traditional gear lever has been replaced with a sleek, ergonomic stalk located behind the steering wheel. Another key change is the removal of the start-stop button—the PHEV model automatically starts once the driver buckles up and presses the brake pedal.

Additionally, boot space in the J7 PHEV has increased to 500 litres from the petrol J7’s 424 litres, as the PHEV does not include a spare tyre, only a repair kit.

Performance and Efficiency of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV

Under the hood, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 143 hp and 215 Nm of torque, working in tandem with an electric motor that produces 204 hp (150 kW) and 310 Nm. Together, the hybrid system delivers a combined 347 hp and 525 Nm of torque, allowing the J7 PHEV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds, slightly faster than the petrol-powered FWD J7, which completes the sprint in 9.2 seconds.

The Jaecoo J7 PHEV comes equipped with an 18.3 kW battery that provides an impressive all-electric range of 106 km (based on the NEDC cycle). Additionally, with a fuel efficiency rating of 5.99 litres/100 km and a 60-litre fuel tank, the J7 PHEV can travel up to 1,300 km on a single tank—a significant advantage for long-distance driving.

Charging Capabilities and Advanced Features

The Jaecoo J7 PHEV supports DC fast charging of up to 40 kW and AC charging of up to 6.6 kWh, ensuring flexible and convenient charging options. The PHEV also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing external devices to be powered using the car’s battery—ideal for outdoor activities or emergencies.

The Jaecoo J7 PHEV comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including adaptive cruise control (ACC), autonomous emergency braking (AEB), and curve speed assistance (CSA), ensuring a safer and more comfortable driving experience.
