Gothenburg, 25 June 2025 – The Volvo XC60 has officially etched its name into the brand’s history books, surpassing the legendary Volvo 240 to become the best-selling Volvo model ever, with over 2.7 million units sold globally.
Introduced in 2008, the XC60 quickly became a global favourite, blending Scandinavian design, award-winning safety innovations, and versatile SUV functionality. Initially manufactured in Europe, it later expanded production to China to better serve local markets. Its global appeal was further cemented when it clinched the World Car of the Year title in 2018.
A Modern Icon
The current XC60 generation has played a central role in Volvo’s electrification journey, especially with the success of its plug-in hybrid variants. In fact, the XC60 was Europe’s best-selling plug-in hybrid in 2024, highlighting its balance of performance, sustainability, and practicality.
“Growing up in Sweden in the 1980s, the Volvo 240 was the iconic family car,” shared Susanne Hägglund, Head of Global Offer at Volvo Cars. “Today the XC60 has taken over that position, not only as a family favourite but as our all-time top-seller.”
Carrying a Legacy of Safety
Much like the Volvo 240 in its era, the XC60 carries forward the company’s hallmark focus on cutting-edge safety. From pioneering City Safety, the world’s first low-speed automatic emergency braking, to Oncoming Lane Mitigation, the XC60 continues to set industry standards. These features have earned it numerous safety accolades across global markets.
Volvo’s heritage innovations – including SIPS (Side-Impact Protection System) and the Child Booster Cushion first introduced in the 240 – have evolved into the foundation of today’s safety technologies in the XC60.
The New Family Favourite
Where the Volvo 240 estate once stood as the global family car of choice, the XC60 has now stepped confidently into that role. Combining comfort, practicality, and peace of mind, it has become the go-to choice for modern families – including those who grew up with a 240 in their driveway.
As Volvo moves steadily toward its electrified future, the XC60 remains a symbol of transformation – offering plug-in hybrid drivetrains that deliver a balance of electric driving and petrol-powered confidence. According to Volvo Cars, about 50% of the distance driven by XC60 plug-in hybrids globally is now electric.
