As the new Volkswagen Golf GTI makes its debut in showrooms in Malaysia, over in Europe, GTI fans are excited at receiving the first news and pictures of the new Golf R. Sales will begin in Germany during the fourth quarter of this year.
The latest Golf R gets a new 300 ps TSI turbocharged engine – that’s 30 ps more than the previous car but like the new GTI, it burns less fuel than before… 18% less as claimed. Power delivery to the road is through all four wheels using the latest generation of version of Volkswagen’s 4MOTION system with a fifth-generation Haldex coupling.
The bodywork mirrors that of the GTI (the Golf R will be available in 3-door and 5-door bodystyles) but sits 20 mm lower than before. There’s a newly configured sport suspension system, new progressive steering system and “ESC Sport” – which can now be fully deactivated for driving on a race track. The improved DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) system with the driving profile selector that features a new Race mode.
The Golf R with a manual gearbox is claimed to go from 0 to 100 km/h within 5.1 seconds, 0.6 of a second quicker than before, but with the 6-speed DSG, it can do the same sprint in 4.9 seconds. The car’s top speed is, however, electronically limited to 250 km/h.
As the R cars are specially prepared by the R division, they get an extensive package of customised and exclusive features. Along with specially designed bumpers, side sills and 18-inch alloy wheels, the Golf R can also be visually distinguished by details such as standard bi-xenon headlights with newly-designed LED daytime running lights (in dual-U design), dark red LED rear lights and two-branch exhaust system with four chrome tailpipes.
Inside, the Golf R underlines its position as the flagship of the model range with sport seats in a “fabric-Alcantara” material mix, leather-trimmed 3-spoke sport steering wheel, ambience lighting, automatic climate control and a radio-CD system with touchscreen.
Having offered the Golf R here before, it’s a certainty that Volkswagen Malaysia will also import the new Golf R in due course. In the meantime, all its efforts are focussed on launching the new Golf GTI this weekend.
