The second generation of BMW’s smallest model range – the 1-Series – has arrived in Malaysia and unlike the first generation, BMW Group Malaysia is offering the new model with as many as five versions at launch. Three versions – the 116i, 118i Sport and 118i Urban – are assembled locally at BMW’s facility in Kedah, while the 125i Sport and 125i M Sport are CBU imports.
All versions, except the 116i, include the BMW Service and Repair Inclusive (BS+RI) service program and have the following retail prices (without insurance): 116i – RM 170,800.00; 118i Sport – RM 190,800.00; 118i Urban – RM 190,800.00; 125i Sport – RM 238,800.00; and 125i M Sport – RM 253,800.00.
Introducing the new model to the Malaysian media this evening, BMW Group Malaysia’s CEO, Dr. Gerhard Pils, said: “The all-new BMW 1-Series showcases BMW’s innovative prowess as it demonstrates the hallmark brand qualities of a BMW vehicle with sporty elegance, new and refined engine technology and luxurious comfort. Set to create new benchmarks in performance, efficiency and comfort in the premium segment of the Malaysian Automotive industry, we believe that the all-new BMW 1-Series will meet our discerning customers’ individual needs.”
Designed to cater to the sophisticated urban driver, the new 1-Series is the only rear-wheel drive vehicle in the premium compact car segment. Highlights of the model are its 8-speed automatic transmission (a unique offering in its class), BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder petrol engines and 50:50 weight distribution which endows the car with superior handling characteristics.
Developed from scratch, the second generation measures 4.32 metres long and 1.77 metres wide (an increase of 85 mm in length and 17 mm in width), making it a slightly larger car than its predecessor. The front is dominated by the recognizable BMW kidney grille as well as expressive new headlights, foglights and three part air inlets. The xenon headlights and front indicators are positioned inside the inner light rings of the twin headlights. The taillights are spaced further apart with the rear lights appearing wider.
The 116i and 118i are equipped with a new 1.6-litre engine which is tuned to produce 136 bhp/220 Nm for the 116i and 170 bhp/250Nm for the 118i.
For the 125i, the 2.0-litre powerplant produces 218 bhp with peak torque of 310 Nm available from 1350 rpm all the way to 4800 rpm. This version enables a claimed 0 -100 km/h time of 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 243 km/h.
The latest BMW EfficientDynamics technologies include Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start/Stop function, as well as ECO PRO mode.
Different combinations of wheels, interior trim and cosmetic details differentiate each version with the Sport Line aimed primarily at active drivers focusing on the dynamic appeal of their vehicle as it emphasises the agile character of the 1-Series.
The 125i M Sport’s distinctive exterior elements are the M sport suspension, and 18-inch M style Star-spoke light-alloy wheels. Inside the car can be found a M Sport leather steering wheel with the dashboard layered with the exclusive M Estoril Blue matt and aluminium hexagon interior trim with Alcantara Antharacite upholstery.
With the new 1-Series, BMW Group Malaysia also offers customers the option to upgrade with the M Performance package. This package consists of 19-inch M Performance Double-spoke light alloy wheels with the 4-colour M logo, M Performance rear spoilers and fins, and M Performance stripes running from the bonnet over roof and onto the rear end (in a choice of black or white).
The M Performance package also includes interior elements such as an Alcantara steering wheel with carbon trim and race display with integrated race computer, and M Performance carbon gearshift lever with Alcantara gaiter. Coupled with the M Performance pedal covers and footrest in stainless steel, the character of the car will certainly be transformed to something much sportier.
The ergonomic cockpit design has the freestanding Control Display and iDrive operating system. BMW ConnectedDrive offers in-car vehicle connectivity which provides owners with complete USB and Bluetooth features to expand functionality for mobilephones and audio streaming, as well as BMW Live (a web-based mobility service which is accessed via a smartphone). BMW Apps can also be accessed via a menu through a smartphone which provides direct connection to web radio, Facebook and Twitter.
The BMW 125i Sport and BMW 125i M Sport are available from today while bookings for the 116i, BMW 118i Sport and BMW 118 Urban can be made from this Saturday. BMW Credit Malaysia offers financing programs for the new 1-Series with monthly instalments that begin from RM1,600 (for the 116i), subject to terms and conditions.
