New 2020 Audi A3 Sportback Launched As Five-Door Body Only

Audi’s new A3 Sportback may lack a three-door body, but now bigger, new infotainment system, and driver-assist systems

Audi has launched the new 2020 Audi A3 Sportback and as the title suggests, the new 2020 Audi A3 Sportback will not come in the three-door guise. However, the new 2020 Audi A3 Sportback will come with many digital elements as well as a bigger overall dimension, uprated suspension and driver-assistance systems. 

The exterior of the new 2020 Audi A3 Sportback a sporty design to make up from the loss of the three-door body. It features the wide Singleframe and large air inlets at the front. While the car’s shoulders extend from the headlight to the rear lights. The headlights in question are Matrix LED headlights which consist of a pixel array of LED segments, similar to Mercedes-Benz’s clever adaptive LED headlamps.  

Now measuring at 4,340 mm long and 1,820 mm wide, the new Audi A3 Sportback has grown by just over 30 mm compared to the outgoing model. The 1,430 mm height and 2,640 mm wheelbase remains unchanged. The standard boot capacity stands at 380-litres and folding the rear seats down ups that figure to 1,200-litres. The loading floor can be adjusted at different heights. There’s also the optional hands-free boot opening sensor available upon request.   

The interior features a new shifter design, aluminium or carbon inlays, and a gloss-black instrument panel. The seat upholstery is made of recycled PET bottles with contrast stitching used for the first time. The driver-focused cockpit comes with a 10.1-inch touch display as standard. And the A3 Sportback’s Audi virtual cockpit 12.3-inch offers three different interface designs and can also be fitted with the optional head-up display. 

The A3 Sportback also comes with the new third-generation MMI infotainment system. The computing power is ten times higher than the predecessor and includes functions such as telephony and the Audi connect services with LTE Advanced speed, and also has an integrated Wi-Fi hotspot. 

Powered by Google, the MMI’s navigation system is able to inform and make route changes depending on developing traffic situations ahead, high-resolution satellite images from Google Earth and detailed 3D models of major cities. 

The A3 Sportback is connected to the smartphone via the myAudi app, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, as well as via the Audi phone box. Moreover, the Audi connect key is able to authorise drivers to lock and unlock the car and start the engine via their Android smartphone, and Amazon Alexa will follow shortly after the market launch.

At launch, the new Audi Q3 Sportback in Europe will come with three engines:

  • 148 bhp 1.5 TFSI turbocharged petrol engine
  •  114 bhp 2.0 TDI turbodiesel engine
  • 148 bhp 2.0 TDI turbodiesel engine

All engines will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed S tronic gearbox, and all of which sends power to the front wheels.

The 148 bhp Audi A3 Sportback’s four-link rear suspension will come with adaptive damper control as an option, which lowers the body by 10 mm. The adaptive dampers can adapt to road condition or can be adjusted on the fly via Audi Drive select. The sport suspension is a standard with the S line trim, or as an option for the regular A3 models. This lowers the A3 by 15 mm for sportier driving dynamics.

Equipped as standard with Audi pre sense front, swerve assist and lane departure warning, the A3 Sportback helps prevent accidents. Additional assistance systems, such as the lane change and exit warnings as well as the cross-traffic and park assist systems, however, are available as an option. Also, the A3 Sportback is fitted with the adaptive cruise assist. 

Presales of the new Audi A3 Sportback in Europe starts in March 2020, with the first cars delivered to customers at the start of May. Audi did not provide details as of when the Audi A3 Sportback might come to Malaysia.
