The Automobili Lamborghini branded surgical masks and shields may potentially be fashionable wearable items, but they are made for more important applications.
Automobili Lamborghini, the makers of aspirational supercars and soon-to-come track-only Squadra Corsa hypercar, has mobilised its upholstery team to produce surgical masks and protective plexiglass shields to be used against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lamborghini will be churning out 1,000 surgical masks and 200 face shields a day, which is made using 3D printers within the carbon fibre production plant and the Research and Development department. The effort has been approved and supported by the Emilia-Romagna region and in collaboration with the University of Bologna.
However, making personal protective equipment is a lot different than making a car, therefore the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences will oversee validation testing of the medical devices made by the Italian supercar maker, prior to their delivery to hospitals.
