These are the first official pictures of the facelifted Proton Persona for 2019 which, together with the Iriz, are the first models in the company’s current range to receive an extensive exterior refresh since Geely formed its partnership with the Malaysian carmaker.
The redesigned exterior shows design elements which identify this as a Proton, specifically the ‘Ethereal Bow’ that debuted on the X70 and the radiator grille with the ‘Infinite Weave’ pattern sculpted into its design (also started on the X70).
Sleek LED daytime running lamps (DRL) are housed over a honeycomb mesh backing while a new bumper lower garnish ties together the new design elements of the front bumper and frames the lower air intake more elegantly.
At the rear, the most noticeable changes are the PROTON name on the bootlid and the omission of the brand logo. The large letters of the brand name were probably suggested by the designers on the Volvo team who, many years ago, decided to enlarge the brand name on their vehicles. Steve Mattin, head of design then, said he wanted to make the brand name visible from a greater distance and from the first XC60 launched in 2008 onwards, the VOLVO name was bigger.
The Persona name badge also receives a new bolder and more flowing typeface in keeping with the overall exterior styling theme. Other new elements are the design of the 15-inch aluminium wheels and a shark fin antenna.
Proton says that the new Persona will be equipped with a colour touchscreen for access to connectivity options as well as voice command functions. The connectivity system, adapted from the one in the X70, will make the Persona the first B-segment family sedan to offer such an advanced system to Malaysian car buyers.
