All-new Hyundai Ioniq 5 launched, from RM199,888

All-electric SUV from Hyundai, Ioniq 5 is their second all-electric vehicle

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has unveiled the IONIQ 5 SUV with innovative features like a 230V plug in the second row seats, solar roof for additional range, complete safety features including the Smartsense suite and an ultra-fast charging speed.

Three variants, namely Lite, Plus, and Max are available and boast outstanding range, fast charging and a top speed of 185 km/h. The Ioniq 5 is the second electric vehicle (EV) to be rolled out in Malaysia by HSDM, after the Kona Electric launched last year.

Standard specifications include 19-inch rims for the Lite and Plus, 20-inch rims for the Max, LED head and tail lamps, 12.3-inch Digital Cluster and 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment monitor.

The IONIQ 5 Lite and Plus are rear-wheel drive and come with a 58 kWh battery pack with a WLTP range of up to 384km. The Max is all-wheel drive and has a 72.6 kWh battery pack which also gives a longer range, up to 430km (WLTP).

The power output from Lite and Plus are identical: 168bhp, 350Nm of torque and a 0-100km/h time of 8.5 seconds in Sport mode.

Built on Hyundai’s dedicated Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) architecture – Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the IONIQ 5 supports both 400-V and 800-V charging infrastructures.

The platform offers 800-V charging capability as standard, along with 400-V charging, without the need for additional components or adapters. With a 350kW DC station, the Max variant can be recharged from 10 percent to 80 percent in 18 minutes. Five minutes charging adds a range of 111km. With a 50-kW DC charger, the Ioniq 5 can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 47 minutes. A standard 11 kW home AC charger can charge from 0% to 100% in 6.1 hours.

Advanced safety features offered in Hyundai Smart Sense include:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA)
  • Lane Following Assist (LFA)
  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
  • Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)
  • Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LVDA)
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)
  • High Beam Assist (HBA)
  • Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA)

The Ioniq 5’s exterior was inspired by the Hyundai Pony. The wheelbase is 3,000mm, the overall length is 4635mm. There are auto flush door handles that enhance aerodynamic efficiency. The front and rear forms of the vehicle merge together at its doors, offering another example of Hyundai’s ‘Parametric Dynamics’ design.

The Ioniq 5 interior is movable and multi-configurable, with eco-friendly materials through out. Besides ultra-fast charging, the car also has a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function that can supply up to 3.6 kW of power. That’s enough to run or charge electric bicycles, scooters or household appliances. It also comes with advanced connectivity, driver assistance features and advanced autonomous safety features.
